Communication Skills and Graphic Designers

Graphic design is a form of communicating visually using text and/or images to present information, or promote a message. The art of graphic design embraces a range of cognitive skills and crafts including typography, image development and page layout. Graphic design is applied in communication design and fine art.

The problem with many graphic artists is that they lack the listening skills necessary to turn their client’s vision into reality. It’s a tough job really and many of my clients come to me disappointed in their existing logos and designs. I usually don’t contribute it to the lack of skill on the designer’s part–but, most often, lack of listening skills. Many times ego gets in the way. Designers are artists and we all know how artists can be, right? (Hey, watch it…I’m one too!) But, with age comes wisdom and patience and lots of other things I won’t discuss–and often we learn via the school of “hard knocks!”
